Prophet Bushiri sparks outrage

Controversial Malawian prophet Shepherd Bushiri has torched a storm on social media following reports that his church members and followers across the world will now be required to pay monthly subscriptions to access his church services held online. This comes barely a month after the enterprising cleric sparked a furore when he asked for congregants to pay for tithes and offerings during the lockdown which is meant to curb the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak.

According to information reaching chaosafrica from South African publication, IOL, worshippers will have to pay R80 per month to subscribe to Major 1 Connect, an application which helps them join the video conferencing hosted by Bushiri. A statement from the church reveals that Bushiri launched the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) online church service on Sunday, attracting over 6 million viewers worldwide

The statement also adds that the church’s latest move to start an online church is a necessary one considering people are on lockdown and adhering to social distancing guidelines. According to Bushiri, his church members and followers across the world become part of the church services through subscribing to Major 1 Connect.

‘Through the video conferencing, those connected are able to interact with the Prophet, just like a normal physical church gathering. They are able to talk with the Prophet and most important of it all, to pray with him as their number one prayer partner.’

‘The ECG Church is happy with the innovation as it provides a platform of praise and worship that is safe, one that keeps people in their homes, in the wake of Covid-19.’

However, as soon as the news hit the social media streets, Twitter users were already up in arms, accusing the cleric of trying to cash in on the situation.
