THIRSTY South Africans are reportedly border-jumping into Zimbabwe to buy beer following a lockdown in their country which led to a ban on the sale of alcohol as party of COVID-19 emergency measures.
Police in the border town of Beitbridge have confirmed reports that South African nationals are crossing into Zimbabwe in search of the wise waters.
The officer commanding Beitbridge Police District, Superintendent Tichaona Nyongo, told NewsDay that: “I have heard that, but our cycle patrol team has said cases of border jumping were on the decline following stepped up operations by the South African defence forces and a yet unexplained sudden flooding of the Limpopo River.”
Villagers from Dite area, east of Beitbridge town, claim that some South African nationals bring groceries for barter trade.
Reports further indicate that security officers who were mandated to man the area are demanding varying amounts for goods which are being smuggled into the country and at times R15 per carton of any grocery.
President Cyril Ramaphosa recently declared that beer was not an essential requirement during the lockdown which is set to run until at least 1st May>chaosafrica
