Zimbabwe soldiers injured in a freak accident again. Soldiers deployed to enforce the COVID-19 lockdown order in Mashonaland East province escaped death by a whisker on Monday after their truck veered off the road and landed on its side while chasing a commuter omnibus in Murewa.
According to witnesses, the army officials were pursuing a commuter omnibus ferrying people towards Mutawatawa when the truck overturned. “The truck was pursuing a commuter omnibus while effecting lockdown rules at Murewa Business Centre,” one witness said.
“It is during the chase when the truck was involved in an accident after veering off the road. For the past three days, Murewa Business Centre was a no-go area as the officers were a bit ruthless.”
Another witness added: “Some of the officers sustained some injuries. The residents were even complaining of how the soldiers were harassing people even those with genuine concerns.”
Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza said he was yet to get the details of the accident. In April, a soldier died while 24 others were injured after an army truck overturned about 49km from Kariba. The army officers were travelling from the resort town to Harare>chaosafrica
