In another sad development, a woman from Kwekwe is in critical condition and battling for her life, after she drank poison following the collapse of pyramid scheme Bevern Capital.
iHarare has learned that the woman whose identity has not been disclosed had invested thousands of United States Dollars with Berven Capital, after being lured by the prospects of making massive returns passively. Online publication, Midlands News reports that the woman is currently hospitalized at Kwekwe General Hospital where her condition is critical.
The exact circumstances which led to her ingesting the poison in an effort to commit suicide are yet to be established. She was admitted at Kwekwe General Hospital on Saturday.
The Ponzi scheme offered fantastic returns of 50 percent in just 6 weeks, which saw many people flocking to ‘invest’. Bevern Capital had branches in Harare and Kwekwe and seemed to be doing a roaring trade as many people were rushing to ‘invest’ after being told of the fantastic opportunity by friends, relatives and workmates.
Unfortunately for these people, their dreams of enrichment quickly turned into a nightmare, after Bevern Capital closed down its branches citing regulatory and compliance issues.
Worse news was to follow. The company is alleged to have defrauded people of US$2 million. Two of the directors of Bevern Capital, Bevern Dzinoenda and Ambrose Chikukwa have since gone on the run. They are wanted by the police in connection with contravening the Banking Act after allegedly operating their money laundering business in Harare and Kwekwe.
The pyramid scheme’s third director Richard Boutros Samunda was arrested on Friday. However, on Monday Samunda was released after being granted bail of ZWL$18 000 at the Harare Magistrates’ Court>chaosafrica
