BREAKING: Mafume elected Harare may

WARD 17 (Mt Pleasant) councillor, Jacob Mafume is the new Harare Mayor following elections at Town House this afternoon.

He takes over from Herbert Gomba, who was recently recalled from council by his party.

Mafume got the better of Ward 25 councillor (Highfield), Luckson Mukunguma in a close contest.

Following a secret ballot, Mafume received 19 votes while Mukunguma had 14 with one spoilt ballot.

Mukunguma was hoping to become the second councilor from the “ghetto” to win the mayoral race.

Former Glen Norah (Ward 27) councillor Herbert Gomba had become the first Harare mayor from the western suburbs when he was unanimously elected on September 3, 2018 after the only Zanu-PF councillor Martin Matinyanya, who had nominated himself, failed to get a seconder.

Gomba however, is no longer in council after he was recalled by his party, which led to Thursday’s elections>chaosafrica
