There was drama on Wednesday after a virtual meeting hosted by the Meteorological Services Department National Climate Outlook Forum was interrupted by hackers who flooded the virtual meeting with pornographic images. The virtual meeting had to break midway after hackers posted pornographic material on the platform.
The virtual meeting was discussing the 2020/21 agricultural season forecasted weather pattern. Environment, Climate, Tourism, and Hospitality Industry permanent secretary Mr. Munesu Munodawafa apologized on behalf of the Government.
“We had to break the Zoom virtual meeting following the posting of offensive adult material during the meeting by some unidentified hackers,” he said.
The Zoom virtual meeting resumed after about 10 minutes and it ended with no other interruptions.
Munodawafa called on the government to expedite the Cyber Security Bill so as to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
“The government seriously needs to expedite the passage of the Cyber Security Bill. We need to create secure virtual platforms where Government business is conducted,” said Mr. Munodawafa.
The development comes amid rising insecurity concerns over the use of Zoom for meetings by organizations and government institutions.
With the coronavirus pandemic, which has fizzled physical gatherings, several businesses and government agencies have turned to video call platforms for virtual meetings.
