DETE: Villagers from a community here were left shocked when a visually impaired man was last Wednesday found hanging from a roof truss in his bedroom hut.
Mungombe Mudenda (48) from Tabatana Village under Chief Nelukoba had been left home alone by his nephew Fabion Lazarus Nkomo (38) who left in the morning going to work.
The two were living together and Nkomo would on a daily basis, make food, and leave his uncle alone as he left for work.
However, last Wednesday, Nkomo returned home around 4 pm and found his uncle hanging with a piece of cloth from the roof truss and reported the matter to the police.
It is suspected that Mudenda stepped on an empty 20-litre bucket to reach the truss. However, it’s not clear how he got the bucket and cloth (commonly known as Zambia) into his room.
An internal police memo seen by NewZimbabwe.com shows that Nkomo found his uncle already dead when he returned home.
“On 2 September at around 8 am, Nkomo prepared breakfast for Mungombe Mudenda and left home going to a neighbouring homestead where he was doing a part-time job as a builder. On the same day around 4 pm, Nkomo returned home and discovered that Mudenda’s bedroom door was open. He entered the room and found Mudenda hanging from the roof truss with a piece of cloth,” reads the police memo.
Police who attended the scene found an empty bucket under the deceased’s feet that were hanging. The police also suspect that Mudenda put the bucket near the wall and climbed on it to reach the roof truss.
Hwange magistrate Rangarirai Gakanje waived postmortem as no foul play was suspected.
A number of suicide cases by hanging have been reported in Dete area in Hwange district with another recent one being of a man who hanged himself after his wife left him.
Two months ago, a 65-year-old man also hanged himself at the family graveyard after complaining about being abused by his wife.-New Zimbabwe
