3 die, 10 injured in Chipinge accident

The truck had 18 passengers on board and was also carrying a load of maize-meal

TWO people died on the spot while another died upon admission at Chipinge District Hospital after a Toyota Dyna truck they were travelling in veered off the road, landed on its left side and threw off the passengers and the load it was carrying.

The truck had 18 passengers on board who were some of the beneficiaries of the maize-meal it was carrying from a distribution centre in Ward Six of Chipinge rural.

10 people were injured and were ferried to Chipinge District Hospital where they were admitted.

Police in Chipinge confirmed the incident which occurred yesterday evening along Eastern Boarder Road towards Clearwater.

They said investigations were underway to establish the cause of the accident.

Witnesses said the driver, Tarindwa Kakasi (35), was carrying maize-meal donated by the South Africa government meant for distribution to Cyclone Idai victims from Mubvangazi area to Ward Six when the accident occurred.

“The truck was carrying a load of maize-meal and also 18 passengers who were some of the beneficiaries. After hitting a pothole, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it veered off the road before throwing off the passengers and the load,” said a witness who declined to be named.

The vehicle landed on its left side.

Meanwhile, the Chipinge District Civil Protection Department said they were assisting the bereaved families with coffins.

Assistant District Development Coordinator Mr Tedius Beto said they were also worried about the response of the paramedics to emergencies as there was no ambulance on standby when the accident occurred.
