SHOCKING: Woman dumps dead gogo’s body in dustbin – We don’t have money to bury her

RESIDENTS of Etwatwa in Ekurhuleni joined forces to help bury gogo Ester Ndungwane.

Ester died on 16 December, but her family did not have money to bury her.

Her 39-year-old relative then decided to place her body in a dustbin to throw it away as she didn’t have a funeral policy.

Angry neighbours thought this was inhumane. They sought help from SunReaders so the gogo could be given a decent funeral.

Daily Sun published the story on Wednesday, 22 December.

The 69-year-old was laid to rest on Friday, 24 December.

Community leader Mthuthuzeli Mani said the story touched many people, who jointly donated R7 800 while Councillor Siyabonga Moloi donated R2 000.

“We are happy that the funeral went well, and thank all those who contributed towards it.

“We were really touched by what happened in that house and don’t know what could have happened had we not intervened,” said Mthuthuzeli.

Family member Nhlanhla Nkosi said they had to borrow R3 000 from a mashonisa to buy food for the funeral.

“We don’t know how we are going to pay back the money,” she said.

After Ester died on 16 December, her 39-year-old relative put her body in a wheelie bin and poured water on top.

She is now on the run as community members wanted to beat her up.

“We were really shocked by what she did.

“We are all still waiting for her to come back and give us answers,” said Nhlanhla.

The councillor said he would be holding meetings with community members to encourage them to apply for cheaper funeral policies.

“There are policies for R50 or even R70, and we advise community members to join them,” he said.
