Ken Griffin is Chelsea’s richest bidder yet with net worth double Roman Abramovich’s

The latest anticipated offer to buy Chelsea from Roman Abramovich comes from the richest candidate yet, as the enormously wealthy Ken Griffin prepares a bid with the Chicago Cubs owners.

Ken Griffin has emerged as the richest candidate yet interested in Chelsea as he prepares a bid with the Chicago Cubs owners.

Offers to buy the Blues from sanctioned owner Roman Abramovich are beginning to flood in as the club looks to escape their current state of crisis. Sky reports the latest is set to come from Griffin and the Ricketts family, who own 95% of the Major League Baseball side.

Their joint-investment group, which is expected to make a formal approach on Friday (March 18), will be one of the strongest proposals yet. And that’s largely thanks to Griffin’s wealth.

The 53-year-old was recently estimated to be worth $26.5billion (£20.25bn) by Forbes magazine. In contrast, Abramovich was said to have a net worth of roughly £9bn before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine prompted his assets to be frozen by the UK Government.

Griffin has amassed his staggering fortune by establishing himself as one of the most successful men in Wall Street history. He is the founder and chief executive of Citadel, a multinational hedge fund.

A spokesman for the consortium announcement on Wednesday: “The Ricketts Family, owners of the Chicago Cubs, can confirm they will be leading an investment group that will make a formal bid for Chelsea Football Club this Friday.

“As long-time operators of an iconic professional sports team, the Ricketts Family and their partners understand the importance of investing for success on the pitch, while respecting the traditions of the club, the fans and the community. We look forward to sharing further details of our plans in due course.”

Griffin and the Cubs owners are one of many interested parties from America. Fellow billionaire Woody Johnson is understood to be preparing a £2bn offer.

However, a source from the report said the Ricketts-Griffin bid would be “the most complete bid on the table – no one else has had the on-field success the Ricketts Family have had with the Cubs, combined with successfully completing a massive renovation of an historic stadium”.
