Jamaican DJ Merciless, whose real name is Leonard Bartley, has sadly died aged 51.


Initial reports from Jamaican news sites Jamaica Observer and Caribbean National Weekly reveal that he was found dead in his hotel room in Kingston.

He was staying at a motel near Beechwood Avenue where he was found dead by hotel staff, the Jamaica Observer reports.

The dancehall legend reportedly checked into the hotel alone and had complained of not feeling well, but his cause of death is currently unknown.


Born on July 1st, 1971 in the Turner district of Chapelton, Jamaica, Merciless was a reggae and dancehall artist who had fans across Jamaica and the world.

Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican music that originated in the late 1970s and has a reggae style. Some of the biggest dancehall artists are Vybz Kartel, Sean Paul and Popcaan.

He initially found music success performing with sound systems in Jamaica before releasing his debut album Lend Out Mi Mercy in 1994, followed by his hit album Mr.Merciless in 1995.

His track Mavis was also the top reggae single in Jamaica in 1995 and his other big hits include Mama Cooking, Gal Gizada, Ole Gallis and God Alone.

Merciless has collaborated with a number of big artists including Lil’ John, C-Murder, Aaron Hall and Tall Pree and has a similar sound to rival artist Bounty Killer, who he released a track called No One Cares with in 2000.

The musician, who was hugely popular in the nineties, is also known by the nickname ‘Warhead’ following man music battles with fellow DJ’s such as Bernie Man and Ninjaman.

Tributes to the much-loved Jamaican artists are flooding social media as fans express their condolences.
