Father Of Motswana Woman Jailed For Smuggling Drugs in Bangladesh Speaks Daughter is still alive..read more

Father of a Motswana woman, Lesedi Molapisi, who was jailed earlier this year for smuggling drugs into Bangladesh has broken his silence.

Speaking to Newsroom Afrika, Molapisi’s father dismissed reports that his daughter was executed on Friday. He said Lesedi is still remanded in custody and awaiting trial.

Her goose was cooked when she arrived at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Bangladesh after disembarking a Qatar Airways flight that she had boarded in South Africa. Lesedi was dressed in all-white and had a medical mask when she landed in Bangladesh via Doha on 23 January 2022.

Unbeknownst to the Botswana woman, her arrival coincided with an alert that Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport was being used to smuggle narcotics.

Bangladesh law enforcement said they nabbed Lesedi Molapisi after intercepting her in the “Green Channel”, a passage for passengers with no luggage to declare. Her luggage was searched and 3 kilograms of heroin was found concealed inside.

At the time of her arrest, Bangladeshi media quoted the deputy commissioner of Customs Sanuwarul Kabir saying:

We have information that cocaine is being smuggled but officials from the Department of Narcotics Control primarily confirmed that the seized item is heroin. We will send the samples for laboratory tests

Bangladesh has a zero-tolerance policy towards drug smuggling. Those found guilty of illegally cultivating, producing, transporting, exporting, or importing heroin, cocaine, and cocaine derivatives drugs in excess of 25 grams or millilitres are sentenced to death
