GOVERNMENT has allocated US$5 million to political parties, with Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) now led by self-styled interim secretary-general Sengezo Tshabangu getting more than US$1.5 million.
The disbursements are in accordance with the section 3 (2) of the Political Finance Act, which mandates the government to provide finances to the political parties based on the election results.
The ruling party, Zanu PF, will pocket the lion’s share of the funds having been allocated US$3,420,250.
Beleaguered CCC have been apportioned US$1,579,750.
In a government gazette, Minister of Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Ziyambi Ziyambi announced the disbursements.
“It is hereby notified, in terms of section 3(2) of the Political Parties (Finance) Act [Chapter 2:11], that the total amount of moneys payable to political parties in respect of the year beginning 1st January, 2024, and ending on the 31st of December, 2024, is seventy million ZIG dollars only.
“Forty-seven million eight hundred and eighty-three thousand five hundred ZiG dollars (Zig 47 883 500,00) shall be paid to the Zimbabwe African National Union (Patriotic Front) ZANU (PF) which received 68.4049% of the votes cast;
“Twenty-two million one hundred and sixteen thousand five hundred ZiG dollars (Zig 22 116 500,00) shall be paid to the Citizen Coalition for Change-(CCC) which received 31,5950% of the total votes cast,” read the gazette.
The CCC is facing internal turmoil following the resignation of Nelson Chamisa as the leader of the opposition party.
With the fragmentation of the opposition outfit, Welshman Ncube’s CCC will receive the funds as the bona fide opposition.
