Two students, including one who had attained six As, who died on Wednesday afternoon, on their way to collect their O-Level results, after a kombi overturned.

The two students, who have been named as Denzel and Wayne, were part of a group which was on its way to Mt St Mary’s High School in Hwedza.

Both students are from Harare and Denzel’s funeral wake is being held in Mabvuku while Wayne’s is being held in Southlea Park.

The injured students were taken to Mt St Mary’s Hospital.

One of the two students has been described by colleagues as “the greatest mafia in the world.”

Earlier reports had suggested that several students died in the accident.

However, H-Metro established last night that only two have been confirmed dead while others suffered serious injuries.

A number of parents are praying for the survival of the injured students.

“We are attending Denzel’s funeral in Mabvuku and his body is expected home before being taken to Zvimba for burial on Saturday.

“It’s a sad moment to lose such a young man,” said a source.

Denzel had passed his exams.

“Denzel had 6 As, 3Bs, and a C but I am not sure about Wayne, the funeral wake is being held in Southlea Park. We are yet to confirm the details,” said another source.

A parent said:

“Zvakutyisa kutaura maresults evana because vanhu vakutongoita zvese zvese, kune vasingafarire kubudirira kwevana.”

Authorities at Mt St Mary’s High School in Wedza confirmed the tragedy.

“It’s a dark cloud for both parents and students. We are pleading for prayers. Initially, it had been reported that several students died but only two have been confirmed.

“The other ones are in critical condition while the other is on comma.

“We need more prayers,” said a parent.

A condolence message from schoolmates to Wayne read:

“RIP to the greatest mafia in the world. Your heartfelt presence and all the memories made us who we are.”

The school’s development committee chairman, Mr A Nyasha, issued a statement in which he said the accident happened at Chizema Shops, just before Mkondwa school, some 15kms before their destination.

“Our thoughts are with the families, and friends of our boys who couldn’t make it. This is a very difficult time for everyone in our school community and us as parents.

“We would like to thank the hospital staff for dedicating all their efforts to saving the lives of our children and that of our fellow parent who was also on board that kombi.

“I would also want to thank our responsible authorities and the entire teaching staff for promptly responding when the news filtered at school, our kids included.

“They showed very serious attachment to their former schoolmates. Hope the authorities that be will find ways to console them.”

There have been reports that the kombi was speeding.
