South Africa’s power company Eskom has announced that it is starting Stage 4 load shedding this evening starting from 5PM.

Stage 4 means that Eskom is cutting off electricity supply in different areas to reduce demand on the national grid by 4,000 megawatts of electricity.
To understand how bad this is, Zimbabwe is currently generating 1,328 megawatts for the whole country today.

Level 4 power cuts occur up to 12 times over four days or 12 times over eight days, depending on the schedule.

The power cuts last for about two hours at a time, but in some cases, they can be longer if the grid remains under strain.
It is a moderate to high level of load shedding, worse than Levels 1–3 but not as extreme as Levels 5–8.

Eskom implements Level 4 when there is a significant electricity shortage, often caused by breakdowns at power stations, fuel supply issues, or maintenance work.
