Vice President Paul Mashatile has stated that the VIP Protection Unit members involved in the N1 incident are under his command.

South Africa’s Vice President Paul Mashatile has stated that the VIP Protection Unit members involved in the N1 incident are under his command.

The officers were recorded on tape beating civilians on Johannesburg’s N1 motorway.

“The Deputy President abhors any unnecessary use of force, particularly against unarmed civilians,” a statement read.

Fannie Masemola, the National Police Commissioner, promised an in-depth investigation.

Meanwhile, the police union SAPU has condemned an alleged assault on the N1 by VIP Protection Unit officers.

However, it is requesting restraint until the investigations are concluded.

Officers were filmed savagely assaulting citizens beside a stationary vehicle.

“We really do not know the circumstances around that, but any form of violence as a union we condemn it,” said the union’s Lesiba Thobakgale.

“We are saying to the SAPS management that they need to speed up the investigations around circumstances around this very same matter, so as to get to the bottom of it, to say what really transpired.

“Our principle as SAPU will always remain to be that one should not judge any circumstance up until one knows really everything around it,” he said.

“If indeed there is a case for one to answer to, the law should be allowed to take its course.”

South Africans Outraged By The VIP Protection Unit Assault
South Africans had come out guns blazing enquiring who the VIP was being protected by the officers.

Many went on social media to vent their frustration amidst claims that this is not the first time that they have been caught abusing their authority.

Even if the VIP unit was provoked, protocol would be, to arrest those impeding them perhaps under “Obstructing an officer in their duties”. Not full on assault with guns drawn. These officers all deserve jail time, end of story. There is zero justification for this behaviour.

Highly unprofessional by SAPS VIP members. This indirectly represents our political landscape and is it any surprise that these types of individuals were not allowed into Poland… with guns!? As South Africans we know we are better than this and poorly represented
